Ink Where the Story Breathes
Black-and-white drawings for newspapers and serialized fiction
Tung Pui-Sun’s illustrations are placed where text becomes its most concentrated—between paragraphs, beside dialogue, and along the margins of serialized chapters. In ink and line, they offer room to breathe within dense typesetting. A posture, a glance, or the arc of an arm opens a small space of clarity before readers continue onward. These images are not commentary from above the narrative, but companions that move quietly alongside it.
Created for newspapers and popular periodicals in Hong Kong, Tung’s drawings worked within fixed formats and demanding print conditions. His images appeared in the inner pages of 《香港日報》(Hong Kong Daily News), 《天天日報》(Tin Tin Daily News), 《工商日報》(Kung Sheung Daily News), 《東方日報》(Oriental Daily News), and other outlets, and were produced extensively for serialized fiction published by 環球出版社 (Global Publishing). In magazines such as 《姐妹雜誌》(Sister Magazine), 《清新周刊》(Fresh Weekly), 《愛情故事》(Love Story), and 《新電視》(New TV Magazine), his illustrations accompanied chapters, commentary, and cultural features, responding to the reading habits of a mass audience.
Within these environments, the white of the page becomes as active as the ink. Backgrounds are suggested rather than stated; motion is implied by the direction of the stroke rather than by shading or ornament. The drawings do not interrupt the story, nor do they repeat it. They mark its breathing points—moments of pause, tension, or quiet recognition—before the reader turns the next page.
