Tung began his career at the age of 16 when he first moved to Hong Kong from Mainland China. His very humble beginnings had him sleeping under his drawing table, getting paid less than two dollars a month as an artist’s apprentice.
At the age of 19, Tung became an artistic director for major film studios in Hong Kong, designing three quarters of the film posters and commercials in Hong Kong, plus numerous film sets and costume designs, thereby placing himself among the . forerunners of artistic direction in the Hong Kong film industry.
Beyond the film industry, Tung was also known for his illustrations and book cover designs, which were widely published and collected in Hong Kong and many parts of Asia. His works appeared in about 70 percent of the total published products in Hong Kong. His unique style and great popularity was a major influence on the local publishing industry.
In 1975, Tung began to expand his horizons into cartoon media. He created some of the most popular cartoon characters in Hong Kong, which appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines. For more than two decades, Tung shared his humour and political critiques in the "Manhua" (comics) industry. His work was enjoyed by millions readers in Hong Kong and abroad.
In 1989, Tung immigrated to Canada and began his studies with Chinese painting master Yang Shen-sum. Tung's paintings were exhibited in Toronto, Vancouver, and Mainland China. His art is collected by people from all over Asia and North America. In 2002, Tung was awarded by the provincial government for appreciation of his valuable contribution to the arts and culture in BC.
